Spring 2009: Artificial Flavor

The first taste of spring comes, appropriately enough, from the boys at Artificial Flavor. For spring, the color palette utilized muted earth tones to focus on the fabric and comfortable fits that they've gotten so good at making. This delivery includes something for everyone, whether you're looking for some basics to fill out your wardrobe or needing to add some polish and structure. Click on prices to purchase from the Dapper webstore.

Storm Hoody, $114

Low key, but high shine, the Storm Hoody is the perfect windbreaker. "Wet" nylon is accented with matte trim, ribbed cuffs and hem, and several pockets for function and flair.

Moto shirt, $80

Light-weight twill shirt that works great as either a regular shirt or a shirt jacket for brisk days. Adjustable cuffs and snap-down neck strap with a grosgrain trimmed pocket.

Snap Front Jacket, $114

A sharp silhouette and slightly cropped proportions give a tough look, but the comfy cotton of this jacket provide an excellent contrast. Angled chest pockets, waist pockets, and buttoned-sleeves give it extra functionality and versatility.

Kangaroo Pocket Hoody in black, $87

Simple zip-up hoody in a slightly washed out black for that lived-in look. Gunflap-inspired detailing at the shoulders and pieced hood construction add the necessary details to make this more than a simple basic.

Kangaroo Pocket Hoody in navy, $87

Same as the above, but in a navy colorway.

Havana Shirt in black, $70

Short-sleeved button down inspired by the guayabera shirts of Latin America. Grosgrain trims, contrast flap chest pockets, and a stiff canvas collar give this casual button down a healthy dose of edgy detailing.

Havana shirt in olive, $70

Same as the above, but in an olive colorway with tonal olive pocket flaps.

Waffle Neck, $75

A carryover from a previous collection, we loved the versatility and subte button detailing on the Waffle Neck that we just had to bring it back.

AF Polo in black, $72

Artificial Flavor's standard AF Polo gets an update with a smaller collar and metal buttons. A great piece for any guy's casual wardrobe.

Marcus's pick: Destroyer, $84

Marcus isn't big on watches, but he can't resist something simple, clean, and (of course) black. The Destroyer is made from a high-gloss lightweight plastic.

Michael's pick: Calcutron in silver, $110

Michael is a self-avowed nerd, despite what his cool hair and slim jeans tell you. So it wasn't a big surprise when he expressed his affection for the Calcutron. Stainless steel case with stopwatch and alarm functions as well as a backlit display.

Look forward to another batch coming in March. Click on prices to purchase each shirt from the Dapper webstore.

Ticket to Ride, $85

White button down in a textured weave for a quiet but bold statement. We love the rounded edge on the French cuffs and simple cufflinks which give it a stylist, but not too fussy look.

Radio Retaliation, $86

Need a casual shirt? Need a dress shirt? Opt for both in one, instead. Cool button placket with contrast stripes printed on underneath and inside the back add some visual flair. Roll-up sleeve with a buttoned strap let you go from the office to the bar in a snap.

Modern World, $88

Smooth and sleek, this shirt comes in a dark brown/blue stripe with a covered button placket for a more refined silhouette.

Love in the Club, $98

What looks like a plain black button down is actually loaded with cool detailed work. Tonal black embroidery on the right shoulder and subtle black woven stripes will make people look twice.

Must Read: The Selby

For the last seven years, Todd Selby has been a portrait and fashion photographer, but since June of last year, he's been documenting the lives and homes of his friends on The Selby. But this isn't Home & Garden or Architectural Digest. Selby's photos pay equal attention to homes and the people who live in them. His circle of friends encompasses artists, actors, publishers, musicians, designers, tattoo artists, corporate executives, and restaurateurs. Living next door to Form Vintage Modern means all of us at Dapper spend plenty of time drooling over cool furniture and The Selby is a great example of how style isn't just what you wear, but how you live.

Resolution Solutions

Our resolutions stay pretty much the same year in, year out: make sure guys find what they need, avoid "trendiness", bring in more cool new stuff, and, as always, support our local neighborhood. This year, any resolution to dress/eat/live better makes Valet's "The Handbook" a perfect read.

For 31 days, Valet will publish one hint or tip a day to help you with everything from saving on your laundry bill, to serving your wines, to properly avoiding a repeat performance of that cringe-worthy scene from There's Something About Mary.

Holiday 2008: Orthodox

We're glad to see that the Orthodox guys have stuck to the slick tailoring and attention to detail that we like so much about them. As always, a lot of the names are the same, but, rest assured, there's plenty of new stuff to get you excited. Click on prices to see more photos or to purchase from the Dapper webstore.

Marquez jacket, $290

Love leather bombers? Hate dry cleaning bills and the hassle of spot cleaning? How does a machine washable, waxed cotton version sound, then? This season, the Marquez comes in a 100% cotton outer with a distressed waxed finished that gives it structure and texture. A full polyester lining and ribbed neck lining provide comfort and extra warmth. Ribbing at the cuffs and hem make this fit nice and snug. With zippers and flaps all over the front, the Marquez has a 8 total pockets. Heavy-duty zip front closure.

St. Augustine jacket, $264

The St. Augustine is a great casual cotton jacket with a full cotton lining that has gone through a great washing and aging process for a jacket that's soft to the touch but still has plenty of shape. Zip front with heavy duty snap storm placket. On the front there are two snap-down flap pockets and three besom pockets. Ribbed cuff and drawstring at hem for fit. Drawstring hood with inset neck to keep your neck toasty. Darted and pieced construction all throughout.

Austen plaid shirt, $141

Crinkled, soft cotton in a subtle brown plaid give the Austen a lived-in look. But, as always, the details are what make this shirt more than a shirt. A double-row of buttons allows for a looser or tighter fit, depending on which set you use. Button-down flap besom pocket at the chest. Double-button barrel cuffs.

Sir Lawrence cardigan in charcoal, $180

The Sir Lawrence falls somewhere between a cardigan and a jacket: the heavy knit with ribbed cuffs and hem say it's a cardigan, but the canvas inserts at the shoulder, placket, and pockets say it's a jacket. The perfect combination of slouch and structure, the Sir Lawrence has an extended heavy-duty snap placket for a high-neck look, but looks just as good draped and left unbuttoned.

Sir Lawrence cardigan in black, $180

The same piece as above, but in black.

Kierkegaard jacket, $305

A parka to end all parkas. Although it's tough to see in the picture, the Kierkegaard is done in a thick, combed cotton that has an almost suede-like hand to the fabric. Full zip front with hidden snap storm placket lead up to a low stand collar with zipper teeth detailing. Subtle military-inspired details come in buttoned cuffs and epaulettes. Drawstring at waist, front hem, and back hem for fit. Two large flap pockets on front. Fulling lined.

In Store Now: Triple Five Soul Blazer

Don't know if you've noticed, but lately, it's gotten pretty chilly around Oakland. To the rescue comes Triple Five Soul's Lexington jacket. A hybrid between a blazer, safari jacket, and sweater, the Lexington is a thick cotton five-button blazer with short notch lapels and a high neck collar. Lined with a quilted polyester lining, the Lexington also sports a detachable alpaca/polyester knit neck warmer/hood. Four front buttoned-flap pockets, interior besom pocket, two side vents, epaulettes at shoulders, and functional buttoned surgeon cuffs. ($184, available on the Dapper webstore)
